The Binder family has now been producing truly great Barossa wines for two generations. Rolf Binder offerings are never excessively oaked, possess extraordinary ripe, concentrated fruit, great individuality, and the potential, in the top examples, to improve for two decades. Rolf Binder is the winemaker for several premium brands, and a consultant for many others. But, only one brand crafted at his Veritas Winery bears his own name, Rolf Binder Wines.

Rolf Binder

Rolf Binder is the son of the original Veritas Winery owner, also named Rolf Binder. This Rolf learned all he could from his late father, a renowned fortified winemaker with a penchant for Ports and Sherries. As the trend among the Australian wine-drinking public shifted towards full-bodied red table wines, Rolf began mastering the art of the Shiraz grape, the classic grape variety of the Barossa Valley. Even with outstanding reviews for the Hanisch Vineyard Shiraz, Rolf believes that there is still a lot to learn about taming and enhancing this variety.

Christa Binder Deans

Christa’s wine studies started in 1976 at Roseworthy College. During this time she gained winemaking experience in Germany, France, and Austria. In 1982, she was fortunate to gain a position on the winemaking team of Wolf Blass Wines, developing her area of expertise of white wine and sparkling wine production. Christa spent the 1989 vintage in Champagne, France, at various press houses and wineries. This greatly expanded her love and knowledge of the area and it’s products. Her own skills as a white wine maker have since excelled, ensuring a delicate touch to produce such delicate wines.

The arrival to Australia in 1950 of Hungarian immigrant Rolf Binder and his Austria wife, Franziska, saw the beginning of a dynasty of fine winemakers in the Barossa Valley.

During their initial stint working for the railways, they befriended Elmore Schulz, a train driver and a grape grower in the Barossa Valley. While picking grapes, the met Chris Vohrer and Wilhelm Abel and worked a vintage at their winery. By 1955, the couple had purchased the winery and renamed it “Veritas”.

The demand at this time was for fortified wines which were delivered by car and trailer to the European settlers in the mid-north part of the state. Slowly, a market grew for red table wines as tastes changed.

In 1981, their daughter Christa joined the family business, followed by young Rolf in 1982. Rolf Binder, Jr. took operational control of the winery in 1990, and in 2005 for the fifty-year celebrations, renamed the company “Rolf Binder Wines”.

“One of Australia’s finest winemakers... one of my favorite Australian wineries... his Heysen Shiraz and Hanisch Vineyard Shiraz are consistently brilliant wines.”

Robert Parker
